TRADITIONAL EIGHTEEN-HOLE GOLF COURSE LAYOUTS are not the only option in today’s ever-expanding golf course developments. The NGF (National Golf Foundation) notes the growing trend of shorter courses, such as 9- or 12-hole layouts, and even smaller formats, including 6-hole courses, which are popping up all over the country.

In our backyard, just off M-22, Arcadia Bluffs opened its newest creation this summer, delivering twelve holes under this newer concept. It is called The Dozen, with its shorter format consisting of two six-hole sides (North and South), featuring high-quality design and conditioning as one would expect. https://arcadiabluffs.com/the-dozen

Shorter courses feature fewer holes, making them ideal for beginners or those looking for a casual, less time-intensive round. Similarly, putting courses are in vogue that can add a fun and social alternative that appeals to players of all skill levels. These facilities also help clubs attract younger generations and families seeking a broadened golf experience. Cocktails and putting contests go hand and hand and are a blast. Night golf under lights is finding its way, too.

Alternative facilities offer quicker, more accessible options for golfers pressed for time. Time is the key driver here, and it offers something new that meets modern players’ needs. Traditional 18-hole courses can require 5 hours or more to play; shorter courses offer options for golfers pressed for time. Frankly, time was the issue when I was raising children; slow play drove me nuts. Still does. Maybe I’m ready for these newer options.

In the north, I would also vote to add heated driving ranges and a bar that could support an outdoor skating rink offering great music during our winter months.

Family-friendly is the key.

Congratulations, Arcadia Bluffs, for offering another wonderful addition to the golfing landscape.
