Beach Time

Updated: Aug 2

IT WAS NICE HAVING MY SONS and their families visit Leelanau County for a week this month where they rented a gorgeous home on Good Harbor Bay. The weather was spectacular and the sandy beach setting was appreciated morning, noon, and night.

The boys grew up at my gentleman's farm off Overby Road so the nostalgia of returning to this special beach on Lake Michigan played well with them and their growing families.

We enjoyed many summertime activities, which included golf at Bahle Farms and boating on Lake Leelanau using my best friend's pontoon boat. We repeatedly stopped to swim on the many sand bars in 85-degree sunny weather. How delightful was that!

The grandkids had a blast collecting Petoskey Stones up and down the sandy beach. Their activity brought back memories of Rob and Dave searching for these gems when they were kids some thirty years ago. From the buckets the grandkids collected I'd put money on their scavenging skills. I'm excited to polish and coat these stones to gift back to them as Christmas presents - ideal for paperweights if such things still exist.

A little perspective came from a search of Petoskey Stones' origins. They began as fossilized coral sea beds some 350 million years ago. They remained until those glaciers we all know about began melting and moving 2 million years ago breaking them up and depositing their fragments around Michigan. I also encouraged them to look for teeth from Tyrannosaurus rex so they would keep combing the beach. They're into dinosaurs. I have no idea if this was even a possibility, but it kept them occupied.

In my blog, I write about local things so I've linked to a local author (Brittany Darga) who just published a book about Petoskey Stones. https://www.amazon.com/If-Petoskey-Stone-Could-Talk/dp/1961302438

I ordered two books for early Christmas gifts to share with the grandkids and their parents. Denver and Charleston here they come.
