Nice Surprises

NICE SURPRISES FOUND IN MY BACKYARD are always welcomed, especially in the dead of winter.

My trip up M-22 to Glen Arbor last week filled this bill when I visited the GA Art Center to view Judith Shepelak's colored pencil drawings exhibit, Reflections in Water on display until April 24th. https://glenarborart.org/product/exhibit-reflections-in-water/

The detail she achieves with colored pencils is amazing. The clarity and realism of her landscapes taking in light and reflections off the water are masterful. Her dozen sketches inspired me to purchase a starter set of colored pencils and a sketch pad at Michael’s soon after I visited the center. My interest is in sketching forest ground covers. This is all new to me. Go along with a senior citizen being inspired. So, far, I have sketched a Coleus leaf. Baby steps as they say.

Researching further, I discovered a Colored Pencil Society of America. A quick review of their gallery of winners in 2024 reveals some amazing talent.

“Founded in 1990, the Colored Pencil Society of America (CPSA) is a nonprofit organization for colored pencil enthusiasts working to promote colored pencils as a fine art medium by sponsoring exhibitions and workshops, being involved in product research, and educating the public in general.”

One last heads up. I hadn’t visited Art’s Tavern since last summer, it is a stone's throw from the Art Center. Their Chicken Jalapeno Chowder (Weds) is to live for, as is their Chili. I opted for the Chili, and it is the very best. I wanted to include their tater-tots but my calorie-counting is in force.

What a fun outing.
