I HAVE BEEN STUDYING THE GAME OF BRIDGE for a week using tutorials and videos from the Web. It has been 55 years since I last played the game, and I have forgotten the rules, the strategy, and how to keep score. The skill set needed isn’t returning to me as quickly as I had hoped. Being a bit rusty comes to mind.
I am also focusing on two-player variations as my friend and I seem skilled only at making friends with bartenders, not other couples. Even if we had friends, I’m not confident that offering to play bridge for entertainment makes much sense. Hi there, would you like to start playing bridge in our loft, which has no card tables or chairs? Playing cards on a queen bed seems crude and perhaps challenges proper etiquette.
So, as you might be able to tell by my tone, I’m relearning the game of bridge with a few strikes against me.
The above hand was dealt to me in one of our practice sessions. Let’s recap the bidding I used to try to make a contract (100 points). My partner bid 1 No Trump. This encouraged me to respond to her by declaring a dramatic shift to 3 Clubs, mostly based on my distribution of eight Clubs. She came back with 5 Clubs emphasizing that she too liked Clubs, and we moved on to Game.
Our fake opponents gave a minimal challenge, and we “made” all but one trick. Phew!
Way too stressful.
Perhaps, Gin Rummy would be a better choice for the two of us.
